Childhood

That picture I believe was when I was possibly 6 or so, and it was in front of the Berlin Wall.  Being a kid and so innocent, there was no way in my mind I even knew what the Wall was all about and what it represented.  As we all know the Wall did eventually go down and it signified a time of change.  Germany became a united country and was no longer referred to as East and West Germany.  26 years later and a lot of things in time have changed, however I look at this world now and sometimes wish that I could go back to those times when things were so much simpler.

Everything now has become so high tech and we take a lot of things for granted. For example, I use to predict the weather by simply looking at the mountain ranges and be able to tell what my day would be like.  Nowadays, you can simple get that information from your iPhone (the latest and greatest of mobile technology).  Emails are now the norm for keeping in touch with friends, family and loved ones, and fading away is the art of writing a letter which held more meaning.  The internet is certainly making things easier and quicker to access information and no longer do you require going to the library when doing research.  In fact I dare say that things nowadays are becoming more and more automated that things one day will no longer require human interactions and instead it’ll all be done via a PC.

Regardless, even though things have gotten impersonal and one day I won’t even have to get out of bed to go to work, I still have adapted and accepted change.  It all comes down however to the individual and whether or not they are will to evolve and go along with the change.  That’s all for now, it was just a random thought…..

The Transformers movie is going to be coming out this week in Australia and if memory serves me right, I think we’re first in the world to see it.  They’ll certainly be a big rush to see it and I expect big things from it.  Every kid back in the 80’s to now will have some sort of memories related to the transformers.  From getting up in the morning and watching the cartoon to playing the toys and saying the stupidest junk for example: NAH UH I HAD FORCEFIELD ON!!

But why I brought on the subject of the Transformers, apart from the hooplah and fanfare that will be occuring this week, was that one certain event from it impacted my life.  Looking back there’s things like my very first time, my first girlfriend, moving out of home, travelling around the world, and then there’s losing things close to you.

When I mean losing, it’s death of course, and in my lifetime there’s only been three deaths that have rocked my world.  There was my best friend Eddie, my grandfather and last but not least Optimus Prime.  Now I know Optimus Prime was fictional and all, and hell he came back from death to lead the Autobots once again.  But imagine as a kid not knowing about the concepts of death and then watching a movie then BAM, Optimus is dead.

I remembered watching the movie and I went with one of my friends (who I still keep in touch with), my cousin and her friends.  The movie started off well and and there was intense action.  Oh let’s not forget that you’re watching the Transformers movie here, in a theatre, and when was the last time they ever release a cartoon into a major motion picture.

Then it happened, Megatron shoots Optimus a few times but not before Optimus knocks him off and the Decepticons retreat.  The next scene sees Optimus dying and of course me being a softie, balled my eyes out.  I think everyone in that theatre was silent, in tears or just shocked.  I mean how is it possible that a hero like Optimus just dies.  And imagine the impact it had on kids back then too.

Looking back I think it was a great move by the movie makers and it teaches you that not all things are fair and for every up there’s always a down.  Nowadays I’ve yet to see a Cartoon movie that deals with the issues that the Transformers movie dealt out.  Then again I am just being rather biased seeing as this is the Transformers I am talking about.

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but growing up I wasn’t exactly the best behaved kid.  I was constantly fooling around and getting spanked or owned by my parents.  Even if I didn’t get into mischief, I somehow just had this aura that was causing things around me to go sour (that’s according to my parents mind you).  Anyways what I am about to share with you is a story that my cousin Don and I both went through.  I, too thought it was going to give me superpowers since the jar had a golden lid and a picture of the tiger was on the side of it with strange writing (chinese writing by the way which I found out at a later age).  Anyways without further a do a flashback from my cousin Don:

I was quite the troublemaker. Doing anything in any form for the sake of entertainment. One day I found a strange yet conspicous container called tiger balm in my parents garage and remembered how the Chinese people would use it on everything to make them feel better, it was like a miracle cure for anything. For some reason I thought it was a brilliant idea to apply some to my schlong.
I ran inside the bathroom and locked the door to apply the tiger balm in hopes that this magical ingredient will somehow give me penis superpowers or something like that. Well that plan backfired when I started to get this really intense burning sensation on my wang…it was hot like fiyaaah, it smelled like burning cock…ok well not that bad but holy smokes did it burn. I was confused, I ran out and cried to my aunt but dare not tell her the real reason, instead I told her I was scared of ghosts. After the confusion cleared up, I immediately went to take a cold shower and furiously scrubbed myself. Tiger balm…never again!

So, after reading that folks, what’s your most stupidest thing you’ve done as a kid???
